FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT STARLINK INSTALLATION
The challenges Starlink faces include the high cost of equipment, worries about data caps, potential speed throttling, line-of-sight restrictions, and its impact on astronomy. Despite these technological and logistical hurdles, when a clear line of sight is available, Starlink’s standard service typically delivers speeds between 250 and 300 Mbps on average, making it not only competitive but often superior to many traditional internet providers.
The Starlink Kit is built for easy self-installation, with just two simple steps to get started. You can follow the instructions in any order:
- Plug it in
- Point it at the sky
For optimal performance, Starlink needs a clear, unobstructed view of the sky. If you’re running into trouble with the setup or simply prefer professional assistance, our technicians can step in and have your system up and running in under 72 hours.
Typically, they’re just sealed with caulk, so you can run wiring alongside them. However, if you’re aiming for a precise location, drilling a hole through the wall is often the best option. For Gen3 installations, we generally use a 3/4″ drill bit. In some cases, though, our technicians may be able to route through an attic vent, which allows us to avoid drilling directly into the wall.
Starlink advises placing the dish at the highest possible elevation that remains safe, ensuring minimal obstructions. However, it’s equally important to prioritize a sturdy installation, aiming to minimize any movement in the mount for optimal performance.
For optimal performance, your Starlink dish requires an unobstructed view of the sky to maintain a steady connection with passing satellites. Any objects that block the signal, like tree branches, poles, or rooftops, can lead to service disruptions.
The Starlink router easily covers an area of up to 297 m² (3,200 ft²).
How far can you place the Starlink dish from your home? The Starlink kit includes a power cable that extends up to 100 feet (30 meters). This allows you to position the dish within 100 feet of the power source, though this doesn’t necessarily mean 100 feet from your house itself.
The base included with your Starlink is ideal for ground-level installation or for quickly testing your connection. For a more permanent setup, especially if obstructions block the view from ground level, consider installing the dish in a higher location, such as on a roof, pole, or wall, to ensure a clear line of sight.
Starlink and satellite TV don’t work well together in close proximity. Our technicians have encountered situations where a customer’s Starlink system caused interference, leading to signal drops and disruptions in their satellite TV service. By relocating the dish about 12 feet away, the issue was resolved.
While the ideal direction for the Starlink dish is northeast (especially for residential and commercial purposes), pointing it straight up without obstructions will still provide a decent connection, though it may not achieve maximum speeds or minimal interruptions. We’ve seen Starlink dishes installed on moving vehicles, and they perform reasonably well as long as there are no obstructions like trees blocking the signal.
Installing Starlink in a spot that minimizes the accumulation of snow and prevents any obstructions from obstructing the line of sight. Additionally, severe weather conditions such as heavy rain or strong winds can impact your satellite internet connection, which may result in slower speeds or occasional outages.
If you wish to expand your wireless coverage across your property but are unable to run cables, start by replacing your Starlink router with an EG105GW(T) Router. Then, acquire additional routers to cover the desired areas, configuring them to operate in “mesh” mode.
For optimal performance, positioning the dish on a roof or in a wide-open space is the best option. You can use the easel included with the kit or select from various mounting options available from Starlink, such as a pole, roof mount, or stand. After choosing your preferred mounting method, set it up in your selected location and connect the dish to the router using the supplied cable.
Starlink satellites equipped with Direct to Cell technology provide widespread access to texting, calling, and browsing, no matter your location—whether you’re on land, lakes, or open water.
Starlink provides internet service exclusively and is different from providers like Dish or DirecTV. If you’re looking for access to TV channels, you’ll need to sign up for a streaming service.
Starlink is built to function effectively in wet environments, featuring hydrophobic properties that repel water. However, during severe weather conditions, such as heavy rain or strong winds, your connection may be impacted, which could result in slower speeds or occasional outages.
To ensure optimal performance, steer clear of typical household items that may cause interference. This includes large appliances such as microwaves and refrigerators, as well as thick materials like metal, concrete, or brick. Additionally, be mindful of other interference sources like fluorescent lighting, competing WiFi networks, and faulty electrical connections.
For optimal wireless coverage, position the Starlink mesh routers 1-2 rooms away from the main router. It’s advisable to limit the use of Starlink mesh routers to a maximum of three. In spaces exceeding 6,000 square feet, you may find that Starlink mesh does not provide complete coverage, in which case considering a third-party mesh system might be beneficial.
Depending on your specific setup and Starlink configuration, you can connect between 120 and 235 devices simultaneously.
Once you have used up your allotted Priority Data for the month, you will receive unlimited Standard Data for the remainder of that month. However, this may lead to slower speeds and decreased performance when compared to customers who still have Priority Data available.
The Starlink Standard Actuated and Starlink High Performance models automatically adjust themselves to locate satellites in the sky. You should not attempt to make manual adjustments to your Starlink. For the Starlink Standard and Starlink Mini, utilize the alignment tool to ensure proper positioning for satellite connectivity.
At Starlink Installation Techs, we can send a technician to your location in less than 72 hours, and the installation process typically takes under three hours for an average home. In contrast, many other Starlink installers may require 2 to 3 weeks to complete the job.
